Brilliant Steve. I appreciate your insight. We all need to keep this top of mind - both on the agency side as well as the client side. The same thoughtful strategy applies to TV creative too. “She”, our donor, is much older than most people (Ok - not you and I Steve) who work in this industry.

The other challenge we face is not allowing our creative messages to get too “safe”. We need to courageously risk making people feel uncomfortable to touch their hearts and generate a strong response. Safe creative directed at the wrong demo is definitely going to diminish results.

Very good analysis. However, mothers often give advice without being asked and nine times outof ten we do not take it. But maintain relations and ask about family history and old social beliefs. You may not use this informatioin right now but it shouod be interesting and might be useful some day. Remember the old saying "There is nothing new in this world." mt

Good post Paula. I'd like to see at lot more innovations out there, too. An "Innovation Budget" is a great idea. But I have to point out you could have also have written "Innovate too fast, too much and you could die too." and I've seen, as I'm sure you have, al lot of fad chasing and dumping proven techniques for experimental ones, and so on. As often the case, the right balance is the key.

Great post.

I was taught early in my fundraising career not to fear failure and to make sure that I learnt from every below par campaign.

Being risk averse is no bad thing, not trying anything new probably is. Trying new things and the occasional informed leap of faith makes us push the boundaries and is a lot more fun!

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message home a bit, but other than that, this is wonderful blog. A fantastic read. I will certainly be back.
